SCAD Atlanta presents a free screening of the fashion documentary, “Versailles ’73: American Runway Revolution,” 5 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 28, at SCAD Atlanta, 1600 Peachtree St. NW. After the screening, featured designer Steven Burrows, director/executive producer Deborah Riley Draper, and editor-in-chief of The Atlantan and contributing editor to JEZEBEL and Men’s Book Atlanta Stephanie Davis Smith will participate in a conversation about the documentary.
“Versailles ‘73: American Runway Revolution” follows the events leading up to the iconic 1973 fashion show battle at the Chateau de Versailles between American and French designers, nicknamed the “Battle of Versailles.” The film recounts the event’s beginnings as a fundraiser to restore the Palace of Versailles and the fierce competition that emerged between the lions of haute couture— Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, Hubert de Givenchy, Pierre Cardin and Emanuel Ungaro, and what the French considered easy prey, a group of American designers eager to become household names on the European fashion scene—Anne Klein, Stephen Burrows, Bill Blass, Oscar de la Renta, and Halston.
Through footage and interviews, the film celebrates the ultimate upset when, on the stage where Louis XVI married Marie Antoinette and in front of a who’s who audience of royalty, jet-set millionaires, and icons including Princess Grace of Monaco, Andy Warhol, Christina Onassis, and Josephine Baker, the American designers claimed victory.
Rolling Stone Magazine said, “It’s a superbly told, enjoyably dishy documentary.”
The event is free and open to the public. Reservations are required:
