For the third year, artists donate beautiful objects they’ve made to raise money for the maintenance and improvements to the center’s ceramic, metal and print studios.

The Academy Art Center Studio Benefit Sale is the place to find one-of-a-kind handmade glass, jewelry and ceramics. These works are by local artists (past participants include Daven Hee, Rochelle Lum and Donna Shimazu) and students who generously donate 30 percent to 100 percent of their proceeds. “There are always great bargans on quality art that serious collectors can appreciate,” says Academy Art Center head Vince Hazen.
You never know what you’ll find—two years ago the sale included ceramic works by internationally known Karatsu potter Takashi Nakazato, and there will be a few pieces by him this year as well. The sale will also feature works by Steven Glass (he did the pitcher pictured above), the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts‘ resident potter. And of course there will be items by noted local artists as well. New this year are glass and basketry creations.
