The overwhelming media attention from her parent’s scandalous split has not been easy for Katherine Schwarzenegger
The eldest daughter of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver said the headlines involving her parents’ separation has been difficult.
Katherine speaks out in Harper’s Bazaar and addressing the love-child scandal that rocked her family – and the country.
“My parents always really sheltered us, so when [the separation] started happening, it was like everything came out of nowhere overnight.” Katherine Schwarzenegger said in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar. “I would go out to lunch, and literally 20 people would come and scream at me. And I’m like, ‘This is so inappropriate; you’re trying to provoke me to have an attack and say something crazy.’ ”
In an attempt to escape the unwanted attention, she fled to London in late May to indulge in some retail therapy. And despite the media storm surrounding the demise of her parents’ 25-year marriage,
Ms. Schwarzenegger did her best to avoid reading headlines. ”I see them, but I choose not to read the stories because I figure whether it’s true or not, I don’t need to,” she said. “I just focus on my family and everyone being okay instead of following the gossip.”
Even before the family turmoil, Katherine said, living with such a famous last name was somewhat of a burden during her college days.
“I thought of changing it because, especially for dating, it’s impossible,” she admitted. “It’s something I deal with every day, and I am hyperconscious about it.”
Still, Katherine continues to believe that that “everything happens for a reason.”
“A lot of the time, it’s hard to understand in the moment why things are happening, but I really do think that. I also like to think God doesn’t really give you anything you can’t handle.”
