Alexa Ray Joel – New song, new nose and new attitude
Alexa Ray Joel was born on December 29, 1985. Alexa is a singer, songwriter and pianist. She is the daughter and only child of musician Billy Joel and super model Christie Brinkley.
Her middle name Ray is in honor of the late musician Ray Charles.
She has a half-brother Jack Paris (Taubman, born 1995) and a half-sister Sailor Lee (Cook, born 1998), both being children of her mother Christie Brinkley.
Joel has performed at numerous charity events, and in 2010 was chosen to be the spokesmodel for Prell shampoo.
Joel, who was raised in Sag Harbor, a village on Long Island.
Alexa has said that her father’s 1994 song “Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel)” was written for her, and is her favorite song of his. His 1989 song “The Downeaster Alexa” is titled after a boat he named after her, but is about the struggles of Long Island fishermen. Joel is also briefly mentioned in her father’s 1989 song “Leningrad” (“…He made my daughter laugh,…“, referring to a Russian contemporary of her father, who was a circus clown when they met after her father’s 1987 Leningrad concert.)
At the urging of her mother, beginning at age 4, and more seriously from about age 11 through 16, Joel pursued classical piano training.
Noting that her musical upbringing with her father gave her a “unique inside-peek into the songwriting process,” in 2006 Joel remarked that “It’s no wonder I write music in the same way (my father) does: melody first, and lyrics second.”
Joel said that by age 15 she was finishing complete songs and complementing those songs with piano accompaniment, describing her lyrics as taking on more depth during the ensuing two years because she was also writing poetry.
Alexa attended the Berklee College of Music‘s five week Music-Fest workshop, which reportedly “encourag(ed) her to explore her gifts as a singer and performer”and “helped her gain confidence” as she had been a shy teenager.
On December 5, 2009 Alexa ingested a quantity of Traumeel, a homeopathic alternative to ibuprofen. Alexa is reported to have taken “several pills”; an NYU Medical Center toxicologist said the drug has “no active ingredient” and indicated that it was essentially impossible to overdose (“basically you’d be taking more of nothing”).
Interviewed six months later by ABC News, Joel described herself as having been “distraught and in so much pain” after the end of a four-year romantic relationship but not wanting to bother anyone since it was the holiday season. “I wasn’t trying to kill myself. I was panicked. I was not thinking clearly at all. … I was in so much pain and I just wanted to numb it.””The intent was to calm me down because I was having a panic attack.”
It seems that a nine day vacation to Turks and Caicos with her mother and half siblings Sailor and Jack led Alexa to attempt suicide!
She may have already been depressed from her breakup with musician Jimmy Riot, but it was the constant fighting of the past few days that put her over the edge.
Alexa and her mother have had a rocky past and continually fight over her father. Christie will constantly bash Joel in front of Alexa, while forcing her to defend him.
“They have knock-down, drag-out fights regularly over issues relating to Billy Joel,” said a source close to the family. “She would tell Alexa that her father was an alcoholic and that she had her father’s genes and that she might be an alcoholic, too.”
Brinkley would always be on Alexa about her weight!
According to a former family employee, Christie demonstrated to a 10-year-old Alexa, “This is how you eat a brownie without gaining weight,” while she chewed the baked good and spit it in the trash.
Alexa told People magazine that her April 2010 rhinoplasty “nose job” operation came after five years of consideration, and was to correct a deviated septum and to feel better about herself. “I was thinking about getting this for years,”. She said her nose “always bothered me a little bit. I was self-conscious of pictures taken from the side. To some people that’s vain, but at the end of the day, we all want to feel pretty.”
Joel explained that her surgery waited until she “was in a better place” than at the time of her Traumeel incident four months earlier, further stating that she’s “done with plastic surgery.”
In July 2010, ABC News‘ 20/20 interviewed Joel about “moving out of (the) shadows” of her “two megastar parents,” and about recovery from her December 2009 crisis with depression. While Joel acknowledged it had been “scary” to be “compared to a rock and roll legend,” her confidence was said to be “helped along by a wider acceptance” by others. Saying “I’m not a blond girl with blue eyes and that’s fine,” Joel added that Ultimark Products‘ approaching her to be the face of Prell shampoo in print and TV ads, was a “big confidence booster.” Describing her overcoming the relationship dependence that triggered her December 2009 Traumeel incident, Joel said “I’ve got to get a new band, … whole new songs, …whole new career plan. Everything changed after that incident.”
Alexa vs. Perez Hilton
Ms. Joel released this statement after Mr. Hilton posted this picture on his website.
I can’t help but be a little bummed out because the incredibly cruel, bullying Perez Hilton (this tabloid guy who calls himself the “queen of media”) just put up a horrible picture of me on his site and basically in so many words called me ugly…
I just feel like saying: “YES, my mom and I look completely different, and I’m OK with that. I like that I look unique, or more “exotic”–I don’t want to look like everybody else, and I also don’t want to look like a supermodel–I just want to look like ME!”
Those sites LOVE putting bad pictures up, and everybody has a few unflattering shots–especially on the red-carpet! I’m still not comfortable posing on it, and (who knows?) maybe I never will be, but I’m just so OVER being compared to my mom looks-wise! I’m happy to have a lot of my father’s features –I think he’s very handsome, and I’m quite sick of hearing people call HIM ugly–I think he has a very soulful face–the face of someone with character and integrity–who has LIVED, and has something important to say.
When my mom saw that Perez Hilton thing, she was like, “OK, what’s his point?–I have hundreds of bad pictures taken of me, and I’m a supermodel! Should I release them to the media so everyone can see that NOBODY is perfect?” (I love her for that).
It’s just rather depressing on a larger, societal level because apparently his tabloid site gets an average of 6 million hits a day (internationally), and I just feel like–WHAT IS HAPPENING TO THIS WORLD?
Billy Joel has reportedly signed a deal to write an autobiography, which he plans to call The Book of Joel!
Set to be published in June by HarperCollins, the memoir will chronicle the singer’s marriage to Brinkley, as well as his role as a father to Alexa Ray!
“Your job as a parent is to listen. And to dole out as much love as you can. That includes tough love. I told Alexa, ‘You got yourself worked into such a tizzy. You need to examine that, you need to seek professional advice.’ She tried to do something dramatic to prove to her boyfriend how much he hurt her. I think many people can relate to that excruciating pain of love gone wrong. I’d rather have a broken arm than a broken heart.” -Christie Brinkley
