Gates will open at 11:00 a.m. at Great Meadow Polo Club, as world renowned celebrities John Walsh from America’s Most Wanted, Ignacio “Nacho” Figueras, from Ralph Lauren Polo, Salvatore Ferragamo, grandson of the world famous Italian designer and President of Il Borro vineyard, in Arezzo, Italy and Outback Steakhouse co–founder and U.S. Open winner Tim Gannon will demonstrate their polo finesse at the sixth annual Van Metre Polo Cup.
The event will benefit Capital Caring which helps patients and loved ones make the most of every moment together by offering coordinated care, comfort and dignity to those living with serious illness. For 35 years, they have helped over 75,000 families cope with advanced illness by providing excellent pain relief and symptom management, emotional and spiritual support, and compassion to families across the region. Over 800 guests will gather in the historic Great Meadow in The Plains and enjoy the dazzling “sport of kings,” while sipping on cocktails and engaging in the time-honored tradition of a half-time divot stomp and a memorial dove release, during which attendees can honor a loved one.
“I am proud that once again the Van Metre Polo Cup will raise monies to help complete the new inpatient center,” said Dea Van Metre, longtime donor who oversees the Polo Cup. “The Van Metre family has a rich tradition of giving to hospice and this signature event demonstrates our ongoing commitment. We hope families will come out and enjoy a fun-filled day while making a difference in the lives of the seriously ill.”
“Regionally only 30 percent of those eligible for hospice care are accessing it, while demand for hospice care will grow as our aging population surges,” said Capital Caring Board Member, philanthropist and successful entrepreneur Len Adler. “There is a critical shortage of inpatient hospice beds for a community of our size. This new inpatient center will not only help close this gap, it will be a national model for excellence in hospice and palliative care.”
The Adler Center for Caring on the Van Metre Campus is projected to be built by Summer 2013. Over $13 million has been raised.

About Salvatore Ferragamo
Salvatore Ferragamo is the grandson of the esteemed Italian footwear designer and is currently expanding the Ferragamo family brand portfolio into the wine industry with Il Borro winery and luxury boutique hotel located in the Tuscan countryside. The estate is part of the portfolio of the family’s luxury holdings, including the fashion and accessories business, four hotels in Florence, and a yacht-building company.
Ferragamo’s other passion is polo. He learned to play at a young age while attending Millfield School in England. Ferragamo is a highly regarded player and has played in various tournaments throughout Europe, and particularly at his hometown polo club in Florence and at beach polo tournaments on the Italian coast. His personal polo highlights include playing on Tim Gannon’s team against Prince Charles and Prince Harry in the Outback Polo match at Tidworth. Another favorite was an exciting night game at Wellington with Adolfo Cambiaso, Tommy Lee Jones and his wife Dawn Laurel, and his dear friend John Walsh.
About John Walsh
John Walsh’s work needs no introduction, but it may be news to some that he is a keen and avid polo player. Walsh, an American player, took up the sport later in life, much to his regret. He has found racing around the field at high speeds much to his liking, particularly when it is with his 17-year-old son Hayden (one of America‘s brightest young players).
Walsh has thrown himself into the sport with the typical energy and enthusiasm that has made him so well known in other fields. Respected for his courageous play, he has withstood numerous injuries and continues his quest to become a respected teammate and horseman.
Walsh competes seasonally in Florida and New York, and has also played in Argentina, India, Morocco and China.
