Every Tuesday Ashley Boalch will showcase tech savvy movers & shakers.
While many of us have talents that are limited to our multi-faceted smartphones, in our weekly Tech Tuesday segment we’ll learn about their favorite gadgets and apps. Let’s explore how these advancements simplify their lives.
Matthew T. Christiansen
Tell us about yourself.
I can be easily spotted because I am generally always the most preppy gentleman in the room. I have an undergraduate degree in Biology from Rutgers University followed by an MBA in Finance from Cornell University. My interests include sweep rowing, golf, value investing and basically any excuse to rock a bow tie, pocket square and drink champagne.
I am the Founder, Editor-in-Chief of Capital Gentleman.
I write a column titled “A Journey to be a Gentleman” where I cover events in Washington, D.C. inclusive of galas, balls, charity fundraisers, fashion shows, polo matches and steeple chases. My column highlights some of the most exciting events in the Washington metro area. I interject my thoughts and opinions of the little things in life that you can do to strive to become a gentleman. In addition, the events that I cover primarily have a charitable focus for very worthy causes such as multiple sclerosis, cancer research, adoption, etc. Therefore, not only will you be well informed about glamorous events but you will also be able to support charitable causes as well.
What are your passions in life?
One of my greatest passions is life is value investing. I credit my father with sparking my interest in the financial markets. I made my very first investment while in 7th grade and I have had a romance with the markets ever since.
I also love crew with the Capital Rowing Club! There is nothing like getting out on the open water and seeing the oars dance with the water. Once in a while I am fortunate enough to row past Nationals Stadium as the crowd goes wild from a home run and it is an amazing feeling. Crew may sound like a simple sport but it is an extreme team sport where everyone must row in perfect synchronization. It is a sport of adrenaline, drive and comradery.
Finally, I am passionate about striving to be a perfect gentleman and sartorial sophistication. Being a gentleman is infectious. When you are polite to others then it encourages people to be polite in return.
What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
I played rugby while at Cornell University and competed in the World MBA Rugby Championship held annually at Duke University.
What is your current go-to gizmo, gadget or app?
Why do you find it so awesome?
InkPad is basically a digital version of post it notes. I find it imperative to remember everyone’s name so I like to write a quick note about new people I meet so that I can be sure to know their name the next time that our paths cross. It gives people a positive feeling when they see that you paid special attention to remember their name.
Where can we find it?
App Store www.itunes.apple.com/inkpad
Personally, I have found that people really notice when you dress well and it creates value in your life. People respect you more, they treat you better, it builds confidence, it opens opportunities and women appreciate a guy who dresses well. Many people don’t
quite grasp the full value of sartorial sophistication but my articles will emphasize and prove the point.
“Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.” –President Theodore Roosevelt
