Start your week with words of wisdom from these philanthropic individuals.
As we’re all here on earth together and we all have to do our part. Jana Sedlakova will explore how these shining stars make a difference.

Pet Cause:
The Arts and Veterans
Why is this cause so dear to you:
Having grown up as an Army brat (my father was an officer in the Army) and having a sibling that served in the military, I’ve been lucky enough to have the opportunity to meet so many people who have served our country honorably—some who have even given their lives while serving. These selfless women and men have volunteered to protect our freedom and liberty and yet 40% of our homeless men are veterans. We owe them so much more, including readily available services, such as PTSD treatment and vocational opportunities.
I am also a big supporter of the arts. DC’s art programs (and the funding behind those programs) have been a valuable platform for the arts community. Over the last five years, it’s been amazing to watch the changing cultural landscape of DC. Film, fine arts, and a strong DIY music scene is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what DC has to offer.
Next noteworthy fundraiser:
The GI Film Festival (GIFF) is an organization that promotes both the arts and veterans, my two causes. On January 17, GIFF will hold its annual charity event, “An Officer and Auction.” The evening consists of a fun bachelor auction (the men are current or former military), a silent auction with top-notch items, and of course, music and a good time. Last year’s event was a hoot. Not only was it an amazing evening, but we raised over $10,000 for a worthy cause. We hope to double that this year.
What can others do to help:
Go to: https://gifilmfestival.webconnex.com/Officerandauction2014 to get your ticket to the auction. Share the link with your friends.
Also, when May 2014 rolls around, take time to go to the festival to watch a few films told from a soldier’s point of view. Some of the stories are amazing and many are inspirational. Seriously, watching one of the films from GIFF’s lineup of documentaries, shorts and narratives—all from indie filmmakers–might just make you appreciate what you have THAT much more.
