Learn 4 Change

Maria Tiratsuyan, President and Founder of learn4change

Pet Cause:

Children’s education and character development.

Why is this cause so dear to you:

When I was a little girl, my family was left homeless after a devastating earthquake – hunger and poverty reigned in my country, and children were forced to study under lamp lights or sit in unheated classrooms in the middle of a freezing winter. Everyone was struggling to feed their families, so corruption overtook the educational system and people’s hearts. It became impossible to pursue knowledge or a career. This is still the case in so many countries around the world… It was my father who encouraged me to love the world of books, to value education, and to think beyond the horrific conditions that we were forced to live in. I was determined to defy the norms of that reality. Later in life I realized how fortunate I was to have well rounded and encouraging parents during my formative years, which enabled me to rise up, from living in extreme poverty in a third world country to a graduate degree and a successful Fortune 500 career in the US. I am a real-life example of how education and a positive character can change one’s life, regardless of our circumstances.

This is what motivated me to start learn4change, to empower children with the right resources to overcome life’s challenges and pursue the human greatness that is in all of us. My dream is to see a world where every child has the help and encouragement to develop their abilities, to build a creative and enjoyable life, and to contribute to a positive global society.
