Pet Cause:

Women and girls’ health education and empowerment

Why is this cause so dear to you:

When I was a teen, my family and I were forced to leave an abusive household and flee to a new city. These experiences took a toll on my physical health and emotional well-being during a time in my life when my body was growing and changing. However, healing came from the inside out. After being overweight, and grappling with low self-esteem, I decided to take control of my body with the support of my mother. I began to eat healthier foods and engage in fitness activities, and gradually, my state of mind changed. I was no longer a victim of circumstances, but I was able to take the reigns of my life and start anew. Years later, when I was awarded the title of America’s Miss DC 2012, I took it a step further and began visiting schools to talk to young girls. I realized that many girls, while they were thirsty for knowledge about their bodies, were not provided the resources they needed to be able to make healthier choices. Most of them also had very little exposure healthy habits at home. Had I not been lucky enough to have an attentive mother who was able to be a mentor and teach me what I needed to know about my body, I may not be where I am today. I started Girls Health Ed. for this reason – I wanted to educate girls about their bodies as teens so that they would grow into empowered young women.
